Introduction

Silent Monk is a modern silent movie done in the style of buster keaton of the silent era but with one difference there is sound all around the monk but he does not speak. It emerges from a monastery of the cosmic mind somewhere high in the Himalayas in Nepal. The monastery is three days journey by foot from Kathmandu. The main characters involved are a monk and a comical monkey who is not all together stupid. in the monastery the silent monk continuously meditates sitting in a cross legged position and with his eyes closed. In fact he is a senior monk and the abbot of the monastery but has a serious problem with flatulence which leads to the adventures beginning when he is put out side.

Of the human elements in this labyrinth of the cosmic mind apart from the Silent Monk and the host of other monks in the monastery to begin with are a : paraglider pilot, a bus driver, a bicyclist, an ambulance crew, hospital staff, a motor rickshaw rider, passengers on a ship, inhabitants of a Hindu temple in India, various policemen, yogis, women washing their clothes by the bathing ghats, workers on a building site, workers at a factory, two owners of a Chinese restaurant, a wandering band of gypsies and much else Which are also involved in the comical scenario of the journey of the silent monk as he under goes sliding off of a ridge, riding on an elephant, being sprayed gold in a buddha factory amongst many of the hilarious situations that occur during the journey. Humans are not the only characters to this story however as many animals are involved too. The main one is a monkey that attaches itself to the monk and accompanies him on his many adventures. Other animals include; a whole troop of monkeys, an elephant, dogs, cows and the countless mosquitoes as well as a whale. Birds and a helpful dolphin are involved too.

A powerful bond is created between the monk and the monkey and very often they become indistinguishable from each other. the monkey also quite medative himself is the only one out of the two who has to save them from sticky situations so the monkey is the hero whilst the monk stays silent until the very end where everything comes back full circle and the concept of reincarnation and rebirth is amply explained. The story moves from the sublime to the ridiculous and back to the sublime again…to only stumble back into the ridiculous once more. This is the eternal cycle of silliness that is as important as the cycle of birth, death and rebirth that the monk could learn at the monastery of the cosmic mind.
